Masses in Ecuador protest against privatization and violations against workers
Social organizations and political movements marched on Wednesday in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, to reject the economic policies implemented by the Lenin Moreno government.
The demonstration started at 4 p.m. (local time), near the Simon Bolivar monument, in the historic center of Quito, and people massively marched towards the Carondelet Palace (seat of the government). With banners and slogans that demanded respect for their labor rights, the demonstrators also reiterated their absolute rejection of privatizations.
Social and indigenous movements called for a national strike on that same day, which started since early morning in the Andean country. Among those attending the event are workers from various public and state companies, who reject "massive layoffs, a possible agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF)," as well as the increase in fuel prices, teleSUR correspondent Christian Salas reported.
What critics are calling a privatization wave is starting in Ecuador with the concession of the state-owned National Communications Corporation (CNT), one of the states most profitable companies in Ecuador. People are protesting against the neoliberal agenda, and a possible deal with the IMF.
This is a new episode of mobilizations against a neoliberal agenda coming from the government of President Lenin Moreno, who was elected to continue with the Citizen's Revolution, previously lead by former President Rafael Correa.
