Guayaba (The Guava)

Amongst the fruits of Cuba, the guava stands out; with fleshy pulp that, according to the variety, can be red, white or pink. It is very perfumed and soft when ripe. The guava is present in many aspects of the lives of Cubans. With its pulp and tasty juices, jams, ice cream and sweets are made, whilst the leaves of the plant are used for the preparation of natural medicines. In the 19th century, in the centre of the island, a garment was ‘born’ that in the beginning had the purpose of facilitating the collection of guava. This became known as the ‘guayabera’, but that is a story for another occasion. When a Cuban employs the word guava in conversation, they may be referring to a lie; and if the lie is very large and disproportionately incredible, they say; “Fulanito thought that I swallowed the ‘guayabón’”, which is the same as saying: “Fulanito told me a lie so big that even he doesn’t believe it. If a Cuban mentions that they saw a ‘guayabito’, it means that they saw a mouse. If they say that, for example, Perensejito is a ‘guayabito’ they allude to the fact that this person is a coward. However, if the diminutive ends in ‘a’, it refers to the fruit of the plant located in the mountains of Pinar Del Río, an endemic Cuban species employed in the manufacture of the rum ‘Guayabita del Pinar’. |

Entre las frutas cubanas, se destaca la guayaba: de pulpa carnosa, que de acuerdo a la variedad, puede ser roja, blanca o rosada, muy perfuemada y suave , cuando está madura. La guayaba está presente en varios aspectos de la vida del cubano. Con su pulpa se elaboran sabrosos jugos, mermeladas, helados y dulces; las hojas de la planta se emplean para la preparación de medina natural. En el Siglo XIX en el centro de la Isla, nació una prenda de vestir, que en sus inicios tenía el propósito de facilitar la recolección del fruto del guayabo, y a la que se le conoce como *Guayabera*, pero esa es una historia para otra ocasión. Cuando un cubano emplea la palabra ¨*guayaba,´ en el argó popular, se refiere a mentira: y si la mentira es muy grande y desproporcionalmente increíble, dicen -Fulanito creyó que yo me tragué ese ¨guayabón¨. Que es igual a decir -Fulanito me dijo una mentira tan, pero tan grande, que ni él mismo se la cree. Si un cubano menciona que vio un ¨guyabito¨, es que vió un ratón, y si dice que Perensejito es un ¨guayabito¨, hace alusión a que esa persona es un cobarde, pero si el diminutivo termina en (a), se refiere al fruto de la planta que se localiza en las montañas de Pinar del Río, una especie endémica cubana, empleada en fabricación del ron Guayabita del Pinar.> |
