OF CUBA AND THE CUBANS
BRUJA (WITCH)

En todas partes del mundo, la palabra ¨bruja¨está asociada a la mujer que practica brujería, y la imagen que se tiene de ésta es que va vestida de negro, de saya larga, fea y malvada en los cuentos infantiles, paseando por los aires montada sobre una escoba. Así también se le representa en las artesanías, o frente a una gran olla o caldero preparando especiales "pócimas" en las que se incliuyen sapos, lagartijas y tela de arañas... pero en Cuba... En Cuba, la palabra bruja tiene otras significaciones, sin descartar las antes mencionadas. Es costumbre de los cubanos, sobre todo, las mujeres, llamar ¨brujita¨ a una amiga muy querida: -Brujita, te estaba esperando Y hasta se suele achicar el adjetivo... -Bruji esa comida te quedó deliciosa! Pero, si al pronunciar "bruja" se hace de manera despectiva, puede ser un apelativo nada alagador, porque entonces los cubanos nos referimos a una persona malvada, envidiosa, manipuladora, que acciona igual que una serpiente, arrastrándose sigilosamente y envoviéndo a su víctima hasta aficciarla o inocularle su veneno para "matarle", o lo que igual, que a esa persona todo le vaya mal-. Otro dato interesante es que en Cuba existe un tipo de mariposa de gran tamaño comunmente nombrada tatagua, que se le conoce también como "bruja" en el argó popular isleño. Y "estar bruja" es, estar sin un centavo. |

In all parts of the world, the word ‘witch’ is associated with women who practice witchcraft, and the image that one usually has in mind is that of someone dressed in black, with a long skirt, ugly and evil like in children’s tales, travelling through the air on a broomstick. Witches are also synonymous with arcane magic, particularly imagined with a large cauldron preparing special potions with lizards, toads and spider’s webs. But in Cuba…. In Cuba, the word witch has other meanings, in addition to the ones already mentioned. It is a custom of Cubans, above all the women, to call a loved one or friend ‘brujita’ (literally ‘little witch’); - “Brujita, I was waiting for you”. And you can even shrink the adjective; - “Bruji that food was delicious!” However, if using the term ‘witch’ in a derogatory way, it can be an unpleasant label, because Cubans use this word to refer to an evil, envious and manipulative person who acts like a snake and turns people against one another – in other words, everything goes wrong when that person becomes involved. Another interesting fact is that in Cuba there exists a type of large butterfly commonly called tatagua, that is also known as ‘bruja’ in the island’s unique vocabulary. And, “being a witch”, can also mean being penniless. |
